Advanced: Access Atopos over Tor Browser

Using Tor Browser can hide your IP address from the Atopos server. This is optional.

When this helps

  • You don't want your network identity linked to a room session.
  • You're using public Wi-Fi or a monitored network.

What it does NOT do

  • It does not change end-to-end encryption (messages are already encrypted).
  • It does not guarantee anonymity on its own — your behaviour and device hygiene still matter.

Steps (Desktop)

  1. Install Tor Browser.
  2. Open Tor Browser and wait until it connects.
  3. Visit Atopos in Tor Browser (same URL).
  4. Create a room as normal.

Android

  • Install and run Orbot (Tor proxy).
  • Use a browser configured to use Orbot, or Tor Browser for Android if available.
  • Then open Atopos and create a room.

Recommended hygiene

  • Use a fresh browser profile.
  • Avoid extensions.
  • Don't reuse personal identifiers in room names.

If you also use Mixnet (when enabled on the server), you get layered privacy: Tor for client→server anonymity, Mixnet for traffic-analysis resistance.
